MSU Spring TALKS

Teaching and Learning Knowledge Sharing

Call for Proposals: MSU Spring TALKS, May 7-8 2025

The Center for Teaching and Learning’s Spring Conference on teaching & learning is now MSU Spring TALKS. While the emphasis and scope of the event remains the same, this new name, which stands for Teaching And Learning Knowledge Sharing, more clearly defines the nature of the event’s focus on collaboration, conversation, and community building among MSU’s educator community.

It is in the spirit of TALKS that we welcome your proposals to share and discuss approaches, tools, and practices that support teaching and learning at Michigan State at this annual gathering of educators. Our 2025 conference will be held on May 7 (online via a new conference platform) and May 8 (in-person at the Kellogg Center); MSU Spring TALKS is organized by MSU's Center for Teaching & Learning Innovation (CTLI).

Please consider submitting session proposals that focus on aspects of teaching and learning including, but not limited to:

  • Assessment and Evaluation
  • Classroom and Learning Space Management
  • Course Design and Curriculum Development
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives
  • Educational Technology Integration
  • Faculty Development and Training
  • Peer Observation and Feedback Programs
  • Student Engagement Activities
  • Student Learning Support
  • Teaching Innovation Grants and Research

Participation

MSU Spring TALKS is open to all educators in all roles at MSU, including but not limited to faculty members, course instructors, graduate teaching assistants, administrators, researchers, advisors, graduate students, and those working in curriculum, educator development, or student success.

  • Proposals must be submitted by an MSU educator.
  • Proposals may list undergraduate students as co-presenters.
  • We welcome submissions where one or more co-presenters are non-MSU partners (including those from other academic institutions or community partnerships)
  • To better distribute presenting opportunities, each proposal must have a different submitting presenter. Individuals may still participate as co-presenters for more than one proposal.

Session Types

The MSU Spring TALKS committee seeks proposals that touch on all aspects of teaching and learning in higher education. As in past years, we welcome session proposals in a variety of formats. All session format types will be available on both the virtual day and the in-person day of the conference. Please refer to the descriptions below for details regarding proposal formats.

  • Educator Talk (15 minutes): A presentation related to teaching & learning; educator talks can include sharing practices, successes, and failures educators have tried at MSU.
  • Workshop (50 minutes): Designed with active learning and attendee participation and engagement in mind, these interactive sessions focus on sharing or demonstrating theories, tools, or practices that have practical teaching and learning applications.
  • Panel (50 minutes): A moderated conversation on a single topic or theme related to teaching and learning. Panels will include multiple speakers and a moderator. The moderator serves as the conversation host, facilitates speakers' responses to pre-circulated questions, and guides the subsequent question period. Proposals should include the names of recruited speakers and the moderator.
  • Roundtable (50 minutes): A moderated open discussion prioritizing conversation with each other and the conference audience to discuss a topic related to teaching and learning. Roundtables will include a moderator and may include one or more recruited speakers with expertise on this topic. All session attendees are participants in the discussion. Proposals should include the names of any recruited speakers and the moderator.
  • Poster: A physical or virtual poster presenting a topic, research results, or experiences related to teaching and learning. Each conference day will involve a dedicated poster session for presenters to showcase their posters.
